JUNE 1ST TO JUNE 27TH
JUNE 1ST TO JUNE 27TH2022
Throughout this month, we’ll be thinking about our responsibilities and values with Saturn, Pluto, and Mercury retrograde. This period mimics a slice of fall to come later this year in which every major planet will be in retrograde. (From September 9 through October 2 Mercury, Pluto, Neptune, Uranus, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mercury will all be retrograde; Mars will follow in late October and Venus in mid-December). Seriously. These three together are asking some of us to rethink how our actions will serve and are serving our values, re-examine how much we’ve really grown and transformed, and will have us often struggling to put all that into words.
Planetary retrogrades are moments when planets or other celestial features seem to be moving backwards in the sky from our human observational perspective here on Earth. The planets, of course, don’t ever actually move backwards–it’s just an optical illusion due to the complex ways Earth rotates. Ancient astrologers first noted these times as moments when challenges, confusion, and re-evaluation seem to bubble up to the surface of our priorities and lived experiences. It’s common for pop astrologers to get near-hysterical over the idea of a retrograde, but it’s truly nothing to be too worked up about. Many of the longer retrogrades last for nearly half the year and are energies we become quite familiar with–much like Eric’s excellent analogy of a long frigid winter which seems to become less cold the longer you sit in it. Mercury retrograde, for example, happens 3 or 4 times a year for about 23 days at a time, so many of us simply get used to its influence!
Alongside the solemnity of the retrogrades throughout the month, we have a series of planets moving into Gemini, bringing expansive, curious thought and intellectual thirst into our lives. This will feel like a bright contrast to the retrograde restrictions and the Sun’s entrance into Cancer (which will have us thinking of domesticity), but could leave many feeling disoriented by the tension between their big ideas and the real world logistics of their execution. Try to hold these seemingly incoherent thoughts together simultaneously for the month–in true Gemini spirit!–and don’t be discouraged by the inconsistency. Look to where Gemini falls in your chart to see where many of these transits will be lighting up your life.
This month marks the start of a major “slowing down” astrologically that will carry many of us through October where things will speed up and begin moving forward again.
Pluto & Node in retro all month.
Pluto spends anywhere from 9 to 31 years in each sign with a 248-year rotation around the Sun. Pluto’s retrograde happens for just over 5 months every year and therefore is one of those retrogrades whose feelings we’re all somewhat familiar with. Pluto is a major figure of rebirth and transformation and its retrograde asks us: what part of your life must absolutely change for you to become who you want to become? For your life to be the life you envision? For you to achieve your visions and live up to your own values?
For a Cancer Rising this retrograde will be asking these questions in their seventh house of long-term relationships. They may be experiencing an overhaul of attitudes, patterns, and commitments in that area specifically as it relates to a sense of long-term goals and desired accomplishments within those relationships. Is this relationship growing with me? Is it feeding me? Are we accomplishing what we want to be together? On the flip side, Capricorn Risings will be undergoing a little bit of an ego death–rising from the ashes in fall. Asking themselves if the way they live and the way they interact with the world is living up to their own strong principles and values. Asking: what bad habits need to die or what aversions need to be faced to become myself anew?
Like many of the longer retrogressions, Pluto’s backslide is one that we have become familiar with in our lives–it’s a natural time each year where we are prompted to be reflective about the way we are growing and transforming. It’s likely you’ve been feeling the effects of this in the realm of your life governed by Capricorn on your birth chart since it began in late April. It will become more manageable and natives who are feeling this pull should lean fully into it. Be honest with yourself, dig deep and be open to the reality of what you find there. Be prepared to fearlessly make the changes that must be made when the time is right.
Mars conjunct Jupiter in Aries - 29 May at 5:30 (chart)
Jupiter and Mars together in Aries is major risk-taking energy and this interesting conjunction most certainly favors the bold. Mars (a malefic planet of action, desire, sex, and drive) meets Jupiter (a benefic planet of cosmic fortune, prosperity, expansion and luck) will meet in a somewhat chaotic conjunction that will affect everyone quite differently. Jupiter is considered by many to be a “teacher” planet and, combined with Aries energy, this looks like trial and error wisdom oriented in the Aries aesthetic. Combined with Mercury in retrograde, those with prominent Aquarius, Pisces, Scorpio, Taurus and especially Virgo and Gemini placements may be getting some uneasy whiplash from the “stop and start” energy in the air.
Prominent Cardinal Sign placements (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) this conjunction is pure cosmic favor for an exciting new endeavor or the boost you need to finally finish a big project you started long ago and haven’t yet been able to wrap.
For the past few weeks, the stars have been prompting us to give it a try and see what happens–now matter how unrealistic it may seem. You may feel direct pressure to take uncharacteristic risks and charge straight ahead. Combined with the retrograde, don’t be surprised if you feel compelled to take the first exciting step and immediately doubt yourself, but power through and act boldly. Jupiter will be supercharging abundance in action-oriented Aries until it stations retrograde on July 28, so don’t miss the opportunity to take action.
Look to where Aries falls in your chart to see the area of your life where you’ll be experiencing this call to action. Prominent Cardinal Sign placements (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) will likely feel a burst of fiery, passionate drive around this time in that area. Combined with Mercury in retrograde, those with prominent Aquarius, Pisces, Scorpio, Taurus and especially Virgo and Gemini placements are probably still experiencing a dramatic echo of the “stop and start” energy from early and mid-May–but this conjunction will be an alleviation of the constant second guessing and miscommunications–however brief.
If there’s something you’ve been wanting to do and overthinking all month (or longer!). This is a great day to stop playing it safe and absolutely just go for it.
New Moon in Gemini - 30 May at 6:30 (chart)
This new moon in Gemini looks like to involve a new beginning borne of a place of uncertainty and indecision (especially with Mercury, Gemini’s ruler, currently in retrograde) and happening in first decand of Gemini. The Jupiter and Mars Conjunction forms a Sextile aspect with the New Moon which will inspire a strong drive to act and do something even as we likely feel some uncertainty of what it is exactly that we’d like to do or how we’ll go about it. There is an aspect of opportunity amidst the indecision–especially upon those who engage their curiosity, open-mindedness and consult with others.
Consider how far putting your desires into words can go in bringing those desires to fruition. Spellcraft around setting a new intention looks to be especially powerful on this day which might involve an open declaration of effort to come in one area of our life or a difficult aspect of ourselves we’d like to work on. This moon feels more intellectual and curious rather than expansive through literal action, so use the Conjuction on May 29 or Mercury stationing direct on June 3 forward for explicit action and the period between these transits for planning and intention setting.
Look to where Gemini falls in your chart to see which area of your life this might be impacting most directly.
Mercury stations direct in Taurus - 3 June at 3:00 (chart)
Mercury slunk into Taurus near the end of May, dragging our communicative energy down into a period of burnout and introspection. Once it stations direct here, we will feel some mental tension loosening up allowing action and progressive thought. This is a soft exit back into direct motion as Mercury in Taurus doesn’t speak until it knows what it wants and then it speaks with great precision and clarity.
Look to where Taurus falls in your chart (and Gemini for the June 13 Mercury transit) to see where you’ll be receiving an easing up of communications pressure and likely a fresh burst of inspiration and curiosity.
Saturn Retrograde in Aquarius - 4 June at 16:47 (til Oct 22, 2022)
Saturn retrogrades for about 4.5 months at a time, once a year and so it spends about third of the year in that state. Saturn brings strict fatherly energy into play. This isn’t your Kirkland Signature, cool dad energy, either; It manifests in an Odinic way–stern, aloof, and skeptical of how frivolity serves morality and values. Saturn retrogrades are associated with restriction, obstruction, debts, misery, and an overwhelming sense of dread and hopelessness about the weight of all of the above.
This will be a time when those who are Saturn sensitive (natives with strong Aquarius or Capricorn placements or those with Saturn stelliums involving the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, or Mars) will be feeling the full weight of our responsibilities and how our actions do or don’t map onto our self-proclaimed values–possibly even to the point of near paralysis of action. An optimistic note: Saturn-sensitive individuals are likely extremely familiar with these feelings and this energy. Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius) who have just gone through eclipse season will probably feel this acutely, especially through June 13 as Mercury remains in Taurus. Once Mercury re-enters Gemini, the overwhelming weight of these thoughts will yield to optimism and an expansive sort of curiosity that will start to wonder what’s possible.
June 13 at 10:27 - Mercury enters Gemini
Mercury’s entrance into Gemini will bring us back to a time of curiosity and expansive thought which will loosen the hold of Saturn’s stern, fatherly energy. Mercury is in its Domicile in Gemini where it’s agile, curious, quick-witted, and communicative. This looks like after 9 days of Saturn Retrogression we might be able to come around and have some optimism, friends, and new ideas enter to help lift our doured spirits–especially in the area of our life governed by Gemini.
Full Strawberry Supermoon in Sagittarius - 14 June at 6:51
Last month’s full moon in Scorpio was a major purge of some toxic energy. This lunation looks to be a little more social and gracious and would be a great time to try something new or travel to a place you’ve never been. Nothing epic necessary–but trying a new restaurant, walking through a neighborhood you’ve been meaning to visit, or even attending a park you’ve never been to will bring an influx of energy into our spirits after a choppy few weeks.
Many use full moons as times of “letting go”, but this lunation looks equally well suited to serve as a power grab that could flood your New Moon intentions with spiritual vigor. Feed your emotional landscape and use this burst of excitement to ease tensions elsewhere in your life. This moon brings the wisdom of your friends and the energy provided by new experiences into the area of your life governed by Sagittarius.
Chiron/Mars Conjunction in Aries - 15 June at 9:16
This lunation precedes a Mars and Chiron conjunction that will happen the very next day on 15 June 15 at 9:16 in Aries (chart). This Chiron in Mars conjunction presents an inherent tension between our desire to act/how we act and our foundational traumas and unhealed wounds. The Moon is squaring both Jupiter and this conjunction which makes this moon a tough time to act and manifest and a great time to talk and experience new things or receive power that can be used in service of future actions.
Chiron/Mars Conjunction in Aries - 15 June at 9:16
Summer Solstice & Sun enters Cancer - 21 June at 4:13 (chart)
The Summer Solstice marks the longest day of the year and the official “start of summer”. There are as many solstice traditions as there are cultures and spiritual heritages in the world, and so solstices can be a great time to delve further into your own esoteric and spiritual beliefs, but are equally well suited for trying and learning about new customs. Honoring sun deities is an age old solstice tradition and a great place to start.
But, as the days grow shorter immediately following the solstice and as the Sun enters Cancer, we will enter a season that is paradoxically oriented around the Moon. Cancer is ruled by the Moon–a luminary of emotions that is moody, intimate, and instinctual. As the days begin to shorten, Cancer placements and those drawn naturally toward the Moon can expect to feel drawn towards the nocturnal elements of their practices. The sun entering Cancer will transform Gemini’s curiosity and expansiveness into a yearning for physical and emotional safety and security and a preoccupation with the comfort of the nest. Cancer season asks us to be caregiving, nurturing, and surfacing emotions.
Spellcraft and ritual around nocturnality, nurturing ones’ interiority, and workings in service of protecting and cleansing the home will be particularly well suited for this time just following the solstice during Cancer season. Look to where Cancer falls in your chart to see which area of your life will be particularly affected by this shift in energy.
Chiron/Mars Conjunction in Aries - 15 June at 9:16
Venus enters Gemini - 22 June at 19:35 - (chart)
Venus in Gemini will ask us to place communication as a top priority in relationships. That desire for mental and intellectual connection also brings with it a desire to articulate and discuss ideas, feelings and plans. June’s Gemini transits will feel in direct conflict with the Cancerian pull to focus on security and domesticity. In true dichotomous fashion, the Gemini influence may inspire us to love two conflicting ideas at the same time.
When Gemini is in Venus, you might feel a romantic calling towards someone or something quite unexpected and out of your ordinary (especially mutable signs Gemini, Virgo, Pisces, and Sagittarius). Geminis have the ability to find the beauty in anything and authentically believe it–however fleeting!
Expect to gravitate naturally towards people and experiences that expand your world and a focus on intellect and curiosity. Look where Gemini falls in your chart to see where you’ll be getting a burst of romantic curiosity and excitement during this transit.
